“You know, you don't have to feel sorry for me.” Kisame tells you one day. You've been defending him from the other kids in Kirigakure whenever they pick on him for about a week now and he's always walked away from you before you get to ask him if he's okay all the other times. Now though, he's getting tired of what he assumes your ulterior motive to be in doing this.

“Huh? That's not what I'm doing.” You tell him with genuine innocence regarding this. The thought had never crossed your mind that he'd been seeing what you were doing in this way. Whenever he'd just left without a word before, you'd always just assumed he wanted to be left alone, although that did make you sad. “I'm trying to be your friend because I want to be.” You smile. The boy lowers his head to look up at you sceptically, still not sure he can trust you.

“They're just going to start turning on you as well if you keep this up.” These words are probably going to be enough to convince you to stop anyway. He knows it.

“It's fine.” He'd be surprised by your assurance if he still wasn't so wary. “It's better than you having to go through everything alone.” Kisame shifts awkwardly, not exactly sure what to do since he's so rarely been in this situation before, having someone be nice to him.

“Do you want to hang out maybe?” You prompt and slowly the boy's suspicion subsides to only a quizzical expression.

“Sure.” He at last returns your smile and from that day on the two of you see each other everyday, just playing around or sticking close. That is until one day that you don 't show up to meet him like you always do. He guesses that he shouldn't be too surprised that you've given up on him, but he'd actually started thinking that it was both of you that had fun whenever you were together. Not having much hope, he goes looking for you.

“We're just trying to make you see sense stupid.” He looks over at the sound of some familiar kids talking in this way, so similar to the taunting he's all to used to receiving.

“Why would any smart person want to be his friend?” Another jeers as Kisame steps closer. It looks like they're kicking at something lying on the ground and when the grey-blue boy sees that something is you, he rushes over, tackles those bullies to the ground themselves and stands over them baring his sharp teeth ferociously. They soon scramble to run away, but still insist on cowardly shouting insults over their shoulders at him. He doesn't even care about that though, turning to help you up instead.

“Sorry I didn't show up.” You laugh weakly once you see who your rescuer is.

“That doesn't matter right now _________.” He scolds you, looking at you with hurt rather than humour in response to your attempt at brushing things aside. “I told you this would happen if you were friends with me.” He reveals the reason behind him being upset with you.

“It's fine.” You smile, but it doesn't reach your eyes this time. Kisame shakes his head at you, hopeless.

“I'll take you home.” He insists, but you pull away.

“No. I was really looking forward to seeing you.” You protest. “We can still-” You stop and hold your leg at the pain that shoots through it when you try to walk.

“I was too, but not like this.” He tells you, coming up beside you to put one of your arms over his shoulder to support you as he walks you home, despite your whining.

“__________! What happened?” Your mother asks, full of worry when she opens the door and sees you. You don't answer or look up at her, so she turns to thank the one that's brought you home. When she sees who that is however, her face hardens and she snatches you away, leaving Kisame to look up at her in shock. “What are you doing with that boy?” She yells at you now. “I told you not to talk to him any more.” Her hand collides with your face, but you do your best to hold back any tears with your friend still being here.

“This isn't the first time this has happened...” He theorises quietly.

“It's okay Kisame.” You attempt to smooth things over like you always do.

“Nothing about this is okay!” He shouts at you before running off. You reach out a hand, wanting to go after him, but your mother pulls you into the house and shuts you inside.

Kisame stops hanging out with you after that. He notices you around the village a lot though, always by yourself. He thought with him out of your life it would be easier for you to be accepted by others and that you could be happy in this way. You just look miserable though, and no matter how long your old friend leaves it that doesn't get any better. It gets to a point where he can't stand seeing you that way any more, but he can't look away either.

“... Sorry.” You snap out of your saddened daze to look over at Kisame. He's actually been sat on the opposite end of the bench from you for a while now, but you only notice him when he says this. He's looking down at the ground, away from you though. “I just really don't like seeing you let people walk all over you or treat you badly, only for you to keep saying it's fine all the time. You're lying to yourself if that's what you really think and I feel bad for you, but... I'm sorry I yelled at you.” He apologises again.

“... It's okay.” You eventually accept his apology with these words, not really seeing how you can in any other way. He sighs and glances up at you in disappointment. He doesn't abandon you again however, but does give up on trying to change you.

It's only when the teenage years roll around for you both that he starts to distance himself from you again, but it's for a different reason this time. He's started to like you, a lot. So much that he doesn't think that he can face being rejected by you if he brings it up. Part of him knows that you might just go along with it on the other hand, as you do with so many other things. He doesn't want that either.

“Hey, did you hear about _________ and Arata? Can you believe someone actually asked her out?” Kisame looks over at some other young ninja gossiping about this, his interest piqued. His heart only sinks further as he goes on listening. It sounds like what he feared would happen if he asked you to be his girlfriend has happened with someone else anyway... No. It's probably more likely that you really do like that other guy, not like it would be if you were with him.

“Kisame!” It's you this time that he hears calling out his name in the street a few days later. You're smiling brightly as you run at him with a hug. He doesn't return it, his body stiffening instead in the awkwardness he feels about this. You pull away sheepishly soon afterwards, but are still determined not to waste the first time you've really gotten to see your friend in weeks. “We haven't talked in a long time, huh? Is everything okay?” You try starting a conversation.

“Not really...” He answers vaguely, but avoids eye contact with you when you look at him with curiosity, waiting for him to go on. It's through doing this that he notices the one he's heard is now your boyfriend watching the pair of you from a short distance, glaring at Kisame specifically. The blue-grey boy smiles despite this, returning his gaze to you.

“I just want you to be happy _________. And it looks like you are with him.” He motions towards the other male and you look back to see him for yourself, before turning back to Kisame with a sadder smile than before.

“Yes. I am.” You tell him. “I should probably get going but don't be a stranger, okay?” You call back as you wave, heading over to join Arata. Kisame's grin disappears once you're gone and he clenches his fists. He wasn't lying with what he said to you just now; he does want you to be happy. He just wishes that it could be with him.

Kisame leaves Kirigakure sometime after that. He has his own reasons for doing this, but it's not like you're tying him to the place any more either. He still thinks about you from time to time though, being especially reminded by his partner in the Akatsuki. Itachi might not directly lie to him, but he can still tell that there are things the Uchiha keeps hidden from him. If Kisame hadn't gone through what he did with you in the past, he'd probably be more bothered by this. As it is though, maybe these smaller lies don't matter so much as the ones that drove him from his village.

One day, Itachi and he are attacked by Hunter Nin from the Hidden Mist Village. He doesn't think of you at that time, preferring not to, with what he's going to do to these people. The pair kill off one of the enemy together, but are split up to each face one of the other two on their own.

The one that pursues Kisame remains silent when he speaks to her light heartedly, despite their fighting, focusing on attacking him instead. The man  guesses that doesn't matter. These people aren't here for conversation after all. When he lands the finishing blow on the Konoichi, knocking off her mask in the process, his heart skips a beat. The one he's been fighting this whole time is you.

“__________!” He calls out, catching your limp body in his arms before you fall back into the lake the two of you have been battling on. “What are you doing here? Why did you let me...” Even as big a guy as him struggles to hold back tears too much to be able to finish that sentence.

“It's fine Kisame.” Your voice is barely above a whisper now, but Kisame still hears those all too familiar words from you.

“It's not fine!” He yells at you in the same way he did so long ago, despite being so much older now. “How can you say that now of all times? You have somebody to go home to, somebody who cares about you-” He stops when your hand comes to rest on his cheek. Your body's already turning so cold and that sends shivers through the shark-man.

“But it really is okay this time.” You smile, but your eyes are too dulled by now for the expression to reach them. “I wanted to come on this mission when I heard I'd see you again... the only one who ever really did care about me.” It's true. It had turned out Arata all along had been just a step up from the bullies you faced when you were younger, someone who had taken the opportunity to mess around with your feelings and demean you on a level so much deeper.

“Thank you for releasing me from the relationship I would have just kept saying was fine otherwise. And for releasing me from the one big lie my life became.” You try to lean up, but can barely move any more. Kisame hovers lower over you to hear what you have to say next. It's mostly horror at what he's just done that causes his eyes to widen when you kiss him. A moment later he's looking down at your lifeless body distraught, holding you so much more tightly now that he doesn't have to worry about literally squeezing the last bit of life from you.

“Kisame...” All too soon for him Itachi makes his approach known as he comes up behind him. The shark-man lowers your body to float on the surface of the water. He forces his eyes shut at the sight of your blood covering his hands and takes the time to wash all of this away.

It's only when all of this is done that he gets to his feet and walks past the Uchiha, who soon follows, to leave this place. Itachi hadn't made any further attempts to hurry him. Although Kisame hates them more than ever now, he hopes that this is one secret his partner will keep from the others.
