“Ow...” You pull your hand away from the box you brought your new kitten home in. “You know, you don’t have to keep doing that.” You tell him as you put your finger up to your mouth to suck away the blood from yet another small scratch the little monster’s left you with.

“That doesn’t mean I’m going to ^^:D stop.” He tells you, waving his paws at you with his claws fully extended. All you hear is mewing however. You sigh at his stubbornness and decide to tip the box upside down to get him out of there that way instead.  He soon pokes his head out and then charges at your leg to bite it this time. How dare you treat him this way!

“You’re so violent...” You tell him, standing to be more out of his reach and so you can look down at him. You have to smile to yourself at his spunkiness though. It wasn’t just because he was the only kitten left at the pet store that you’d decided he should be the one you bring home. You’d always had a soft spot for the pets that nobody else wanted, even if they could be a bit more of a handful. You were convinced that that just meant they needed the extra care and attention and you were always ready to give that.

“Well, no matter what it is you do to me, you’re not getting rid of me now.” You risk picking the white kitten up to hug him as you say this, making sure those thrashing legs of his can’t reach you. “So I’m going to have to give you a name.” You tell him.

You think about what to call him for a minute. Despite his bad behaviour he is pretty cute. You were almost surprised to see this little guy left when you’d seen his gleaming silver fur and beautiful violet eyes. Now that you think about it these, along with his violent tendencies, remind you a lot of a character from Naruto.

“Hidan.” The kitten glares up at you in response to this name, suspicious of how you guessed it. This only convinces you further that this is going to be the right name for him. “That’s what I’ll call you.” You lean into nuzzle his fur, but he slashes at your cheek before you get the chance.

*~*~*~*~*

“This is ^^:D stupid.” Hidan rants, prowling back and forth outside your bedroom door. You’d decided there was no way you were going to let him sleep in the same room as you until he at least learnt to stop attacking you.

“I couldn’t even say anything to that ^^:D about that ^^:D food she gave me...  she’s just lucky I was hungry, but it still tasted like ^^:D.” He goes on, stopping to sit on the floor with his head lowered between his shoulders and his tail twitching furiously.

Then an idea comes to him. If all his words are coming out as mews maybe if he tries meowing, it will come out as words and he’ll be able to tell you just how much he hates you and this place.

In your room, you’re startled into waking up by the sounds of the loudest most ear-splitting yowling you’ve ever heard. Once you leave the room to find out that Hidan’s okay, and is the cause of all this, the next thing you hear is some angry knocking on your door. You carry the noisy, struggling kitten over as you go to answer it.

“What are you doing to that cat?” Your neighbour, the one now standing on your doorstep demands to know.

“Nothing!” You tell her honestly, as Hidan continues to wail. You’re surprised by how much noise he can make, being such a small cat. “He just started doing this suddenly...”

“Cats don’t randomly start making noise like that for no good reason.” She snaps at you, shaking her head in disapproval as she walks away. Hidan still hasn’t shut up, but there’s nothing she can really do about it. You either it turns out, as you make every attempt you can to try and calm him down and keep him happy.

“You’re going to lose your voice if you keep this up.” When telling him this doesn’t work after everything else, you throw your arms up defeat before going back to bed, holding your pillow over your ears as you try to get some sleep despite all that noise.

It looks like you manage to somehow, when you wake up to silence the next morning. You smile to yourself, rolling over to go back to sleep after being kept up so late, but a swift swipe across your nose soon gets you to sit up.

“If you want breakfast, all you had to do was ask.” You grumble at the kitten glaring up at you. The pathetic sounding squeak he makes in reply leads you to think he really must have damaged his vocal chords in some way last night. You’re going to have to get that checked out, but food first.

Hidan groans at the bowl of cat food you place in front of him. He already had this last night and whatever you’re cooking seems so much better. He can smell the bacon and clambers up onto the kitchen surface through a series of jumps to get over to it. He drools over it for a few seconds before trying to take the whole pan down onto the floor. You turn around and notice this just as he’s doing that however and as he falls, trying to drag the frying pan with him, you dash over to stop it from falling onto him, burning your arm in the process.

The bacon Hidan was after still ends up landing on the floor next to him though. He smiles smugly to himself, before carrying the piece of meat, almost as big as his kitten-self, off in his mouth. He leaves you with one less piece of breakfast and that painful burn to sort out.

*~*~*~*~*

“Hi, I’m from Animal Protection. We got a call about a cat.” You’ve barely finished your breakfast by the time there’s another visitor to your door. Despite what you guess he’s here for, the guy seems friendly enough so you invite him in. It’s not like he can honestly find any evidence that you’ve been abusing your new kitten anyway.

He checks the whole house over, confirming its safety, before putting on a pair of thick gloves in preparation for handling Hidan.

“He’s pretty feisty, huh?” The man laughs at his own understatement as he places the silver kitten back on the floor. He’s about to pet him on the head, but at the last minute thinks better of it and pulls his hand away. “But I don’t see any signs of abuse here.” He smiles, turning back to you. His expression changes to one of concern as he finally notices all those scratches and bite marks you’ve got, along with that burn down your arm.

“I take that back... Hey listen, if he’s really this violet maybe it will be for the best for me to take him in and-”

“I’m fine.” You cut the guy off, guessing what he’s going to suggest. You tug down your sleeves in some attempts to hide your injuries. There’s a long silence as you and the man look at each other, then he jumps and looks down to find the kitten you’re defending is busy digging its teeth into his leg.

“Okay, okay. I’m going.” He laughs, giving into the kitten’s demands. With that he leaves and it’s back to just you and Hidan being in the house for the day.

*~*~*~*~*

You don’t get the same luxury the next day however. The weekend’s over and you need to get back to whatever it is you usually do when you don’t have days off. Despite all the hassle he gives you, Hidan quickly gets bored without you around. He forces his way out of your house and walks the streets, maybe looking for you... or whatever fun thing may come his way first.

“Digging, digging~” Hidan quirks an eyebrow at this singing to be heard from a backyard he passes. He jumps onto the fence to see the back of a big yellow Labrador as it burrows away at the garden.

“Hey ^^:D!” Hidan leaps down and runs over, already deciding he doesn’t like this guy. The dog turns to meet him with a friendly smile.

“Oh! Hi cat. Do you want to play? I love to play!” He bounds over, wagging his tail. Hidan growls at the boisterous approach, but this doesn’t seem to deter the dog as it crouches down into a playful position, not really having to look up all that far as it gives the kitten pleading puppy-dog eyes while whining.

“No I don’t want to ^^:D play with you... I want to fight!” Hidan grins evilly. If you’re not around for him to torment right now, he might as well do it to someone else. Maybe this’ll even be enough to convince him that he doesn’t need you around as much as he’s started to feel like he has. Probably because he’s a stupid cat right now.

“Oh no!” The dog yelps, jumping back. “I can’t fight you cat. I love you! And fighting is bad.” Hidan glares, despising more than ever the simple-mindedness of this beast. He crouches down low and wiggles his behind, before pouncing to attack the dog anyway. The dog cries out, running around in circles as the kitten clings to his back, clawing it all over.

“Help!” It screams as Hidan tears as big a chunk as a small kitten can fit in its mouth straight apart from the rest of the dog’s ear. It’s at this point that Hidan’s pulled away and the dog jumps further back, still cowering as the struggling kitten is carried into the house by someone he finds vaguely familiar.

*~*~*~*~*

“... Hidan?” You ask, stepping into the house. Alarm bells had started ringing when your feet weren’t dive-bombed on entry, but once you’ve checked every room in the house and still not found him you really start to panic. You grimace as there’s another knock at the door while you’re fretting over your kitten’s whereabouts. This is the last thing you need.

“Hello again.” It’s the guy from yesterday. “I thought you might want this back.” He passes you a sturdy cat carrier with a certain silver kitten sulking inside. You gasp and your face lights up as you take it

“Ah! Where did you find him?” You ask. You’re about ready to hug the man, until he speaks again.

“Well... he sort of beat up my dog.” He steps aside to reveal a very scratched up yellow Labrador with bite marks all over its ears. It’s trembling and its eyes almost pop out when it sees the cat carrier you’re holding.

“... Maybe your dog provoked him?” You try but the man shakes his head, his face showing that he’s taking things fully seriously now.

“I know my dog, and he wouldn’t do that. Besides, there’s not a scratch on your cat; I already checked him over... again.” He sighs, closing his eyes in preparation for what he has to tell you next. “I know this isn’t something you want to hear, but if it had been my dog that lashed out like this, I know what I’d have to do. If you still don’t want to do anything about what’s happened, I’m going to have to take action.” He explains. He gives you one last solemn look, before leading his limping dog away.

You slump against the doorframe and just stand there for a few minutes once they’re gone, at a loss as to what you’re going to do... You guess there’s nothing for it now. If Hidan gets out again like he did today and attacks something, or worse, someone else it’s just going to keep causing even more problems. You hate seeing animals hurt and if your cat’s the one causing that to others so violently it really doesn’t look like there’s much you can do to avoid the inevitable. Swallowing the lump that’s built in your throat, you carry Hidan inside. At the very least you want to be able to say goodbye to him.

“... Why do you keep doing this?” You ask as Hidan bites down on your fingers when you reach in to take him out of the cat carrier. You feel his grip loosen a little when he sees how sad you are though. He lets you pull him out and into your arms.

“Don’t you get it?” You ask as you hold him close to you. “I love you so much, but you make that really hard when you go around hurting and causing so much misery.” Tears start to form in your eyes and Hidan swats at them as they fall, hoping to stop them from reaching his fur. To you it still doesn’t look like he’s listening.

“... And now I’m going to lose you because of all that.” You choke out, at last giving into your tears fully. Hidan gives up on trying to bat them away once that starts and instead wriggles out of your arms to climb up onto your shoulder. He head-butts you to make you look his way, then touches his nose to yours in an attempt to stop your waterworks before you drown him.

You stop crying, but for the most part it isn’t because of the contact. Sitting beside you now is the real Hidan from the Akatsuki. You’re a bit too stunned to keep up your crying now.

“... ^^:D finally!” Hidan laughs as he gets to his feet, checking himself over to find that he’s not a cat anymore. His face falls when he sees the tail still attached though. And noticing the cat ears still atop his head only adds to this. He slumps down next to you. “Do it again.” He demands, his eyes fixed on yours.

“Do what?” You ask, wiping your eyes. You might not know exactly what’s going on, but you know the last thing you want is to be crying in front of this guy.

“Whatever you ^^:D did to make me change back this far!” He says this as though it should be obvious to anyone. The blank look you give him tells him it’s not. “Ugh, do I have to think of everything?” He asks, putting a hand to his face. It’s a while before a spark of realisation hits him and he leans into you boldly instead, his hands on your knees. “Kiss me.” He tells you with a confident smirk.

“What?!” You ask, scrambling away. You definitely want some more answers about the fictional character now in front of you before you go and do something like that.

“You heard what I said. ^^:D kiss me!” He demands again, following your movements. You quickly get up to run and a chase takes place around the house as Hidan goes on insisting upon this.

“This is probably what’s going to ^^:D get rid of these stupid ears and tail!” He tells you when he finally catches up, pinning you against a wall as you still struggle to get away. “And what happened to that ‘I love you no matter what you do to me’ ^^:D?”

“That was when you were a cat!” You yell back. “As far as I know, you didn’t know any better. Why would I want to kiss someone who keeps hurting me on purpose?” You ask, squirming even more before Hidan puts his forehead against yours.

“Then I’ll stop ^^:D doing that stuff... to you at least.” He tells you, looking into your eyes with full seriousness. “Believe it or not, I’ve ^^:D liked having you around. I don’t know why... but I’m not about to give you up over something like that. Just like you didn’t want to give up on me.” This said, and with you finally still enough for him to do it, Hidan pushes his way into a kiss with you. It’s not some magical moment but it satisfies him, especially when he pulls away to find those cat ears and that tail are gone. He smiles to himself, before turning his attention back to you.

“I ^^:D meant what I said, okay?” He tells you, averting his eyes. “Besides, those ^^:Ds can’t do anything to me while I’m like this, so you’re not going to ^^:D lose me after all.” He smirks, but it falters. “But I’ve got to ^^:D find the others now, so unless you want to come with me, you’re probably still going to...”

“No...” You say, finally speaking up after all the words Hidan’s had to say. “I’ll go with you.” You tell him and that confident smile returns when he hears you say this. “... But if you ever hurt me again, I’m leaving.” You add.
Another old thing, but I've decided to put those Akatsuki kitten stories (it's an overused idea, I know) up as separate deviations rather than all in one big file. I've written one of these for each member (including Konan), but Nagato's one is going to be the one that ties them together in the end, even though these don't follow on from each other.

I have these up as results for one of my quizzes on Quotev too, under the username Lilaaku.
